Hyena Facts and Information

Hyena is the fourth smallest family of carnivora as it has only four species and not only that, it is one of the smallest families of mammalia also. Well, this animal is one of the unique components of African and Asian forests. Morphologically and behaviorally hyenas are similar like other canines such as jackals, fox and etc. They prefer catching their victim using their teeth rather than their jaws.

 Hyenas were first found in the forests of Miocene Eurasia around twenty two million years ago. As per looks there are Hyenas of two types one is striped and another is spotted hyena. There are more than 30 species of hyena those are identified till date. Hyenas are identified with the structure of their middle ear and dentition.

Dog like hyena species is the most popular hyena in the world but this species have not maintained consistency. I mean to say that from the starting days to today the number of this species of Hyena has goes on increasing and decreasing. This species of Hyena is identified with its structure which was nimble-bodied and wolfish. During climatic change these dog like hyenas started declining about 5 – 7 million years ago.

Chasmaporthetes ossifragus was a species of Hyena which was able to cross the land bridge to North America. As this species changed its habitat to North America so it was the only dog like hyena species to survive for a long time.

Hyenas hunt 95% more than their consumption and most of their hunts have been driven off by other animals like lioness tigress and etc. The mating process in this animal goes on after very brief interval of time. And you will be amazed to know that the cubs of Hyenas are born totally developed like opened eyes erupting canines and incisors. The stripped hyenas usually don’t prefer to hunt always. They hunt as per their need and that to be occasionally.

The relationship of this animal with humans was vulnerable in past as striped and spotted Hyenas were used to hunt humans in past. Both types of Hyenas are used to be called as man eaters. There are many African stories in past which are related to this animal. But most of the time this animal is considered as an evil one in those stories.
