Polar Bear or Ursus Maritimus are natives of Arctic Circle, especially land masses and sea surrounding Arctic Ocean. Well, this information may be common for many readers out there. Polar Bears Habitat

This bear comes under Carnivora order. Omnivorous Kodiak bear, another species or you can say form of bears is the largest bears in the world and Polar Bear is approximately as large as Omnivorous Kodiak bear. An adult male bear is called as boar and a female is called as a sow, a boar weighs around 350 - 700 kg whereas, a sow weighs approximately the half of a boar’s weight. These bears (Polar Bear) are the habitat of snowy area and prefer roaming in areas of cold temperature like ice, snow and water. Most of the species of bears are born in land but polar bears prefer spending most of their time in sea. Ursus Maritimus, the scientific name of Polar bear means maritime bear.

Facts about Polar Bears

In 1774 polar bears were first described as a different species of bear by Constantine John Phipps. And even Constantine John Phipps was the person who chooses the scientific name Ursus Maritimus.

Initially, polar bear used to have its separate genus which was named as Thalarctos. But later on some evidence proved that Brown bear and polar bear both are the species of a same animal.

The polar bears are mostly found in Newfoundland Island and James Bay in Canada. As the human population is difficult to found in these places so these bears are found in a huge number.

Green land of Denmark, Svalbard of Norway, Alaska of United States, Russia and Canada are some major places where these polar bears are mostly found.

Eight subpopulation out of 19 of Polar bear is declining day by day whereas seven of them have insufficient data and some of the sub population is increasing also. Polar bear is the only living marine mammal in the world as it spends most of their time in the sea. This was something different what you know about Polar bears. Polar bears are powerful swimmers, they can swim continuously for several hours. Polar bear's body parts are  adapted for swimming.

Polar Bear has thick layer of fur, which will keeps them warm even in very cold condition.

Polar Bear tend to overheat due to very thick layer of fur covered on their body. However, polar bear releases excess heat from the body through nose, ears, footpads, muzzle and inner thighs. Where fur is absent.

Ringed and bearded seals main source of food for Polar bears. Sometimes they feed other food like beluga whales and walruses, rodents, searbirds, fish and eggs.
