Lion Facts and Information

There are four big cats present in earth and Lion is one of them, “The King of Jungle”. The male and female lions are different in terms of looks; the male lions have fur all around their head which a female lion lacks. Lion belongs to Panthera genus and Felidae family. Lions are the habitats of Sub Saharan Area and Asia. The largest number of Lions are found in Gir National Park of India. North Africa and Southwest Asia were used to be the place of existence in past but now you will not find a single Lion there.

If you go for the subspecies of Lion you will find a list of 12 subspecies, which survives for 10-14 years. But from a survey researchers have found that Lions can live for more than 20 years. This king of Jungle can be considered lazy, as it remains inactive and keep resting for 20 hours a day.

African Lion

Many people got confused that which animal is taller Lion or Tiger for their information let me tell them that Lion is the tallest cat in the world and is about 2.0 inches taller than tiger. There is no such difference between the skeleton structure of lion and tiger but the structure of lower jaw and height of both the animals make the difference. When it’s about the weight of lion then I would say that it differs in lions of various age group and sex. Adult male lion weighs 330–550 lb (150–250 kg) whereas female lion weighs 265–401 lb (120–182 kg). But in an average a male lion weighs 181 kg and a female lion weighs 126 kg.

Lioness and Lion

White lions, you must have heard about this sub species of lions. The change in the color of the lion is due to a genetic condition which is known as leucism. This genetic condition is just the similar with melanism. Many of you must have question that what is melanism? Well, it is the genetic mechanism responsible for Black Panther. This lion is not different than the normal lion the difference is just the color. These types of lion are especially found in Timbavati Private Game Reserve and Kruger National Park of South Africa.

Do you know? After reaching the age of maturity that is 3-4 year the male cubs are excluded from their parents. In comparison to lion lioness hunts more in numbers as they are swifter than the males. Lionesses are usually short in height than the lions this factor also helps the lioness in hunting. While the lioness goes for hunting the lion look after the cubs till the lioness get back from hunting. Sound awkward right? But it’s true.

1. Unlike other cat family, lion is a group living animal. Each lions group know as pride of lions.

2. Female lions hunts more than male and they use cooperative strategies to hunt their prey.

3. A male lion can eat upto 45 kg in day, where as female lion can eat upto 25 kg.

4. Lion roaring can be heard from three to four miles away. Lion's roar is one of the loudest noises from animal.

5. Do you know? Lions are afrid of humans, elephants and rhinos.

6. Lions have 30 teeth, which includes 12 incisors, 10 premolars, 4 canines and 4 molars.

7. Lions are the laziest animal, they rest for 20 hrs a day.
