than any other big cat.

Pet cheetah top speed and other facts are given below. The
cheetahs are inhabitant of Africa and spread over parts of Iran. It should not
be forgotten that these are the only non-extinct members of the Ainonyx genus.
The cheetahs have always been associated with elegance and royalty.
With a speed of 70 to 75 miles per hour, the cheetahs can cover up to 500 metres. The cheetahs have an ability to accelerate from zero to 100 in just about three seconds. Unlike lions and tigers, cheetahs do not roar but have their own vocalizations for communication among the groups. Certain vocalizations can be listed as bird-like chippings, purring and growling. They even wear facial expressions to convey their moods. Imagine, a cheetah smiling at you is not it funny to watch such a biggie frown or smile? Its cute enough.

Selecting
a place for breeding is females forte. They mostly prefer swamps with tall
grass or rocky plains for giving birth to their cubs. These have unusually low
genetic variability seconded by very less sperm count and motility. But when
grown up, the cheetahs develop a deep chest but a narrowed waist, with a tan
fur with 2-3 cm black polka dots and on tail ending with 4 to 5 rings, but the
white underside is devoid of the polka dots.
However,
these dots aid to camouflage them while hunting their prey down. The female cheetahs have a smaller head than
the male cheetahs but its not an child's play to identify a male or female
cheetah just by appearance because of very less variations in them. A perfectly
grown cheetah weighs about 72 kg, with a length of 43 to 59 inches, and 66 to
94 cm tall.
These once were considered as a sub species of the African cheetahs but
no, these are just a result of recessive allele. Being a rare species, it is
being bred in captivity.
The
cheetahs have semi-retractable claws, helping them hold on a better grip.
unlike other cats, they lack the sheath skin making them visible.
Jahangir,
the mughal emperor was reported to have a white cheetah as his pet in 1608. His
words being quoted, "Raja Bir Sngh Deo had brought me a white cheetah.
Unlike other animals and birds having their white-colored species, I had never
seen an white cheetah before. Generally the spots are black but in it, were
blue and the fur was more blush than white." Mesmerizing-ly cool.
Once
popularly hunted down for their fur, now are losing their habitat and devoid of
their prey. The major population of cheetah is in Africa or South-western Asia.
Only a mere number of fifty survive in the Khorasan Province of Iran. The
cheetahs prefer savannah, prairies, and open spaces with thick bush. It is
quite known to us that, previously, aristocrats used to pet cheetahs. The
aristocrats made them hunt antelopes.
Female
like to be deserted but meanwhile, the male cheetahs like being in a company of
three at least. Females usually attain maturity in 24 months whereas the males
become adults in a matter of 12 months, but this doesn't affect the fact that,
the cheetahs do not mate until they are three years of age. Survey report
reports, females are more promiscuous and usually have cubs from different
males. They do not have a mating season though, its their all year fun!
After
a gestation period of ninety to ninety eight days, the mother cheetah gives
birth to nine cubs although the average is four. The cubs weigh about 300
grams. You do not need to wait for the spots to appear, these cubs are born
with their spots and mantle on their neck extending to mid-back. These help
them scare their predators away.
But as they grow, the mantle is given away.
Raising a cub is the mother's department, she even takes her cub out for
hunting and nurses their way back home. the cubs stay with their mommie till a
year and a half or two. It is quite evident that female cheetahs have been
proved as good mothers, the extra loving and caring ones.
You
cannot just not notice the black tear mark, on the corner of the eyes running
down to the sides of nose. It has an agile but thin body, making it a swift
runner but not the ideal runner for long distances.
The
cheetahs are quite less aggressive and so can be easily tamed. This is the
reason, the cheetah cubs are sold illegally in some parts as pets. In the 1700
B.C, a tamed cheetah was gifted to the King of Thebes. Egyptians have been
owning cheetahs as pets and are reported trainers and tamers of cheetah.
They
were trained in the fields, blindfolded, dogs flushing their prey out. When
preys were near enough, the cheetahs were released and folds removed. Indians
adopted this culture from Persians whom the real culture was passed to.
We
have talked much about past, but that does not mean, cheetahs are not kept as pets
in this modern era. Burmani is one of the pet cheetahs, raised in England at
Eagle Heights wild animal park since it was three months old. Tamed to such an
extent, Burmani has lost its hunting skills.
Various
conservation institutions and organizations tried educating farmers on not
killing of cheetahs as the farmers believed cheetahs ate their harvests.
It
should be noted that, the cheetahs are the least capable of adapting to their
surroundings and when bred in captivity too, but a few zoos and conservationist
firms have made it work. The trick they apply is using a dog as its playmate so
that it feels less threatened in captivated environment.
If at all I could have, I would have kept a cheetah as my pet. I hope you like reading Pet cheetah top speed and other facts.
