Honey badger or ratel or honey ratel scientifically known as Mellivora capensis belongs to Animalia kingdom, Phylum Chordata and class mammalian. Honey badgers are black except for the gret mantle, separated with white stripes, extended from the crown to the base tail.

The color of the mantle and stripe may vary from one individual to another and often becomes darker with their age. The hair is rough or coarse and is longer on the hind legs and tail. 

Honey badgers have always been destructive mammalian predators of honeybee in Africa and they can cause substantial losses to both traditional and commercial beekeepers.

Honey badger has distinctive jog-trot and 23 cm to 28 cm high and the length of the tail 12 cm to 30 cm long of an adult. Male may be twice the size of females. These are distributed from the greater part of South Africa, through the middle-east to southern Russia and eastwards as far as India and Nepal. 

Honey badgers favour bee honey. They are even carnivorous and eat insects, frogs, eggs, snakes, birds, turtles and rodents. They kill and eat highly venomous snakes such as cobras. It is classed as least concerned by the IUCN.

Wolverine scientifically known as Gulo gulo also referred as glutton, skunk bear, etc is a powerful animal that resembles a small bear but is the larger member of the weasel family. The wolverine is known to be strong and vicious and is said to have immense strength in comparison to its size.

The wolverine is found throughout Canada, Europe, parts of North America, and Arctic Circle. They belong to Animalia kingdom, phylum chordata and upto 31 kg.  Wolverine is omnivores but their diet mainly consists of meat. Wolverine generally eats rats, birds, eggs and other small mammals during summer month and during winter month they hunt for larger animals such as sheep, moose, and raindeer.

Wolverine uses its large teeth and powerful jaws to crush large bones and eat meat that has been frozen. It lives up to 10 to 15 years. Wolverine are a shy species, they live in dens made out of snow and can be found in remote forests.

When food is available, the males have a home range of approximately 1000 square kilometres and females stay within 100 square kilometres.

Honey badger or wolverine fight- who will win?

Honey badger and wolverine, both these animals are largest in their respective ranges.

The wolverine teeths are unique and their jaws muscles are powerful used for breaking the bone. However, their claws are curved and therefore ideal for hooking and shredding. The wolverine is fearless in terms of its behavior. Its primary way of killing its prey is by biting the throat and crushing with its powerful jaws. The main defence against predators of wolverine is its ferocity.

The honey badger’s defenses are fourfold.  The honey badger would fight nonstop until it is dead or the attacker gets tired. Its second defense is tirelessness. They keep on fighting for hours and hours. The honey badger has a reversible anal gland through which a suffocating smell is produced.    

The wolverine’s greater strength and powerful teeth and jaws overpowers the honey badger. Honey badger’s teeth are smaller than that of wolverines. However, it would not be possible for a honey badger to kill the wolverine by biting.
