Honey badger facts

A Honey badger fighting a snake! Most of you must be thinking that an animal whose name is as sweet as a honey badger it is impossible to be fighting against something as vicious and dangerous as snakes. But let me enlighten those who do not have any idea about this creature that this honey badger is one of the most furious predators in the world.

It even holds a record in the famous and most known Guinness book of world record for being one of the toughest hunters ever known!

The honey badger (Mellivoracapensis), got its name because of it eating habit i.e. because it loves digging honey and its favorite meals is bee larvae, which is even deeper inside the hive than honey. This creature goes nuts when it comes to these two things.

The honey badger is most commonly known as the ratel. And although it is named as badger but it does not closely resemble other badger species, rather it bears more similarities to weasels anatomically. This tough little creature gets most of its advantage due to its thick skin which is distinctly set and broad across the back on its justly long body.

The skin around the neck is 6 millimeters (0.24 in) thick and tail is short and is covered in long hairs. The head is a tiny one and flat in which two small button shaped eyes fit in with ears which look nothing more than ridges on the skin. And this is what it uses as one of its advantages because when they are so small it is difficult to get damaged in a combat.

It not only just possess tiny eyes and ears but it also has small but strong legs, with five toes on each foot which are equipped with very strong claws which can literally rip its prey apart accompanied with soles that are thickly padded and naked up to the wrists. It basically measures 23 to 28 centimeterswhich equals 9.1 to 11 inch in shoulder height and 68–75 cm in body length.

And let me tell you, do not get misjudges by its cuddly appearance and more than sweet name; because apart from being equipped with all those heavy duty mechanism it also possesses an incredibly intelligent mind which also acts as one of the important tools in winning the battle of life. These creatures can sometime be observed using tools to catch prey and nifty enough to follow Honeyguide birds to find beehives where they’ll eat the larvae and honey.

Apart from these this cunning creature has one more exclusive weapon up its sleeve which is a reversible anal pouch which has an incredibly strong, stifling odor.  It uses this stench as an additional firearm when it comes to defending against large predators like lions.

It just squirms about in its skin and gets its long claws and mouth with sharp teeth in such a position to harm the predator that is holding it. The tough skin prevents the poison to penetrate inside.

And apart from that they have a natural guard which exempts them from getting affected by many types of stings and venom. Even if it is involved in a dirty fight with snakes as deadly as all that these poisons do is to knock it out for few hours before it is again jumping around hale and hearty.
