Komodo Dragon Facts and Information

Komodo Dragon, I think it’s an unknown name for many of you out there. And those who have heard about it may not have all the information regarding this animal. This animal is a type of lizard and is popularly known as Komodo dragon and Komodo monitor. This is a large species of lizard which is a habitat of Indonesian islands such as Komodo, , Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar.

 This species of lizard length around 10 ft that is 3 m, and can weigh around 150 pound that is 70 kg. This animal belongs to the order of Squamata, reptilian class and Varanus genus. This animal can survive for almost 30 years and takes 8 – 9 years to get matured. There is one amazing name related to this animal and that is buaya darat which means land crocodile.

According to a report of Guinness Book of World Records, it is found that a male komodo can weigh almost 174 to 201 lb (79 to 91 kg) and a female komodo can weigh almost 150 to 161 lb (68 to 73 kg). When it comes to length of this land crocodile the male can be of 8.5 ft and a female can be of 7.5 ft.

The origin of Komodo was started from Asia around 40 million years ago but later on the Varanus genus migrated to Australia. And with the passage of time this species of lizard migrated from Australia also and now it is found in Indonesia. The present Komodo dragon is very much different than its ancestors of 4 million years ago and that is in terms of structure.

The largest Komodo dragon which was found 166 kg in weight was of 10.3 ft in length.
The most amazing fact of this animal is its hearing power which is 400 – 200 hertz range whereas we the humans have this range of about 20 and 20,000 hertz.

Like all other species of lizards this lizard is very venomous and its bit effects on humans. The effect of its bit causes localized disruption of blood clotting, rapid swelling and shooting pain. This post must be the first one for many of you but some of you must have been aware of this animal before reading this post.
