King Cobra Facts and Information

Ophiophagus Hannah is the scientific name world’s longest and most venomous snake. Yes, you guessed it right I am talking about King Cobra. These snake lengths about 5.6 – 5.7 m (18.5 – 18.8 ft). Like all other snakes this snake is also carnivorous but the most amazing fact about this snake is it preys on other snakes. Seeing the name you must be thinking that this snake will be a snake of Naja (true cobra) genus. But you are wrong despite of having name King cobra this snake doesn’t belongs to the genus of true cobras, rather they belong to their separate genus.

King Cobra

These snakes are mostly found in the forests of Southeast Asia and India. The longest king cobra till date was of 5.6 – 5.7 m and this specimen was kept in London Zoo. But in average this snake grows between 3 – 4 m and weighs around 6 kg. But before the King cobra of 5.6 – 5.7 m was found there was another specimen which was 4.8 m in length. 

When we are talking about one of the most venomous snake then how we could skip out the venom contain of this snake. Well, in just one bite the victim can receive venom around 200 – 500 mg. When this snake bite anyone it fangs goes into the wound around 1.25 – 1.5 cm. But it is also found that bite of all king cobra doesn’t deliver venom. Rapid fatality can be the result of envenomation after the bite of this snake. The results of envenomation can be seen in 30 minutes.

This species of snake is one of the endangered species in the world and in India person who dares to kill this snake will be imprisoned for 6 years. In legal words this action comes under Schedule II of wild life protection act, 1972. When you move on towards the behavior of this snake you will find it similar to all other snakes.

This snake has a keen eye sight and can identify its victim with its smell. This is not a different feature than any other snake but it is also an interesting one.
